In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all creation. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his followers.
The Statement of the Noble Imam, the Scholar, Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn ‘Abdullah al-Ājurri – may Allah have mercy upon him:
"All praise is due to Allah, by whose blessings righteous deeds are completed. All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, the Prophet, his family, and his followers. As for what follows:
A questioner has asked about listening to singing/music: Is it blameworthy or permissible? This is due to the widespread trial that has afflicted many with the love of hearing it. it has been mentioned that some listen to it from young bondmaids, others from well-known singers who are recognised for their profession, and some prefer to only listen to glabrous (beardless) young boys, disliking hearing it from anyone else. The questioner wished to know: Is this permissible, so that one may listen to it? Or is it forbidden, necessitating its abandonment?
The Answer—and with Allah Lies Success:
What we affirm, hold as our religious position, and advise our brothers with is that:
Listening to singing/music in all its forms, as mentioned, is forbidden. Only the one who follows his desires listens to it, indulging his soul in its pleasures despite Allah’s prohibition and the Messenger’s ﷺ prohibition. The scholars have also censured listening to it.
If someone asks: Clarify to us what you say, so that perhaps one who has been afflicted with listening to it may feel ashamed before Allah, restrain himself from it, and instead incline towards listening to what Allah has encouraged in His speech, which is a healing for the hearts, guidance, and mercy for the believers.
He is to be told: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said:
"And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk to mislead (men) from the path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it as mockery. For such, there will be a humiliating punishment."
(Luqmān 31:6)
The early scholars from among the Companions and those after them among the Tābi‘īn have explained this verse, stating that it refers to listening to singing and all forms of falsehood.
Furthermore, authentic narrations have come from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibiting the sale of the singing bondmaid, their purchase, listening to them, profiting from them, and consuming their earnings.
Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) and others said: "Singing plants hypocrisy in the heart."
Mujāhid commented on Allah’s statement concerning Iblīs:
"And befool them gradually, those whom you can among them with your voice…"
(Al-Isrāʾ 17:64)
He said: "His voice refers to singing and falsehood."
Makhḥūl was asked about the singing *bondmaid*, and he said: "Whoever purchases a singing slave girl, purchasing her for her singing and music, and persists in that until he dies—I will not pray over his funeral. This is because Allah has said in His Book:
"And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk to mislead (men) from the path of Allah without knowledge and takes it as mockery. For such, there will be a humiliating punishment.'"
(Luqmān 31:6)
A man asked Al-Qāsim ibn Muhammad about singing, and he replied:
"I forbid you from it." The man then asked: "Is it prohibited?" Al-Qāsim said: "When Allah distinguishes truth from falsehood, where will singing be placed?" The man replied: "With falsehood."
Muhammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah explained Allah’s statement:
"And those who do not witness falsehood…"
(Al-Furqān 25:72)
He said: "It refers to singing."
Isḥāq ibn ‘Īsā at-Ṭabbā‘ said: "I asked Mālik ibn Anas about what some people of Madinah allow regarding listening to singing. Mālik responded: 'Only the immoral ones do that among us.'"
Whoever fears Allah restrains his soul from its desires, even if it inclines towards them and enjoys them, Shayṭān beautifies for it what is prohibited. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said:
"As for him who feared standing before his Lord and restrained himself from desires, then indeed, Paradise will be his abode."
(An-Nāzi‘āt 79:40-41)
And the Prophet ﷺ said:
"The strong one is not the one who overcomes people, but the strong one is the one who overcomes his own soul."
May Allah grant success.
