O Muslims, indeed celebrating the Mawlid of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم is incorrect and prohibited. This is due to several reasons:
Firstly: It is an innovated practice in the Religion, and every innovation is misguidance. And those who wish to establish the practice of the Mawlid will never be able to bring a proof for it from the legislation (i.e from the Qur'aan and the Sunnah).
Secondly: It is resemblance to the Christians, in their festival of the (supposed) birth of The Messiah عليه السلام (i.e. Christmas). And we have been forbidden from resembling them.
Thirdly: There often occurs in these (mawlid) celebrations evil and prohibited affairs. The greatest of which is Shirk in the worship of Allaah. This occurs by way of supplicating to the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, and seeking refuge in him, and reciting poetry containing affairs of Shirk in the praise of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, such as the the Qaseedah of al-Burdah, and others like it.
Fouthly: There are no Eids (annual festivals) in Islaam except two eids: Eid-ul-Adha and Eid-ul-Fitr. So whoever initiates a third Eid, has innovated a practice in Islaam which is not from it. And it is reported from Anas ibn Maalik رضي الله عنه that he said:
"The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came to Al-Madinah, and they had two days in which they used to play in. So he صلى الله عليه وسلم asked: "What are these days?" They said "We used to play in them during Jahiliyyah". So he replied: صلى الله عليه وسلم "Indeed, Allaah has replaced these two days with two better days; Al-Adha and Al-Fitr. (Reported by Abu dawud, Ahmad, An-Nasaa'i, and its chain of narrators is in accordance to the conditions of Muslim).
