Sheikh AbdulAziz bin Baaz رحمه الله تعالى was asked:
Q: Does the recitation of the Qur'aan on behalf of the deceased benefit him in his grave?
A: There is no proof for this,
the Qur'aan is not recited for (the sake of benefitting) the deceased, rather you supplicate for forgiveness and mercy for them, (likewise) you give charity on their behalf, this is what is legislated. As for reciting the Qur'aan, and (intending) the reward of it being for the dead, then there is no proof for this. Even though some scholars have said this, there is no proof for this statement.
