Question posed to Sheikh AbdulAziz bin Baaz رحمه الله تعالى:
Q: How does Eeman (faith) Increase?
A: Eeman (faith) increases and decreases. It increases with acts of obedience and decreases with acts of disobedience. So when a person prays the five daily prayers and preserves them, and alongside that he prays the rawaatib¹, then his Eeman increases.
And if he fails to perform the rawaatib, or pay the zakaat or fast, or uphold the family ties, then his Eeman decreases. Therefore, Eeman decreases with disobedience, and increases with obedience. And thus in his scrolls of deeds, and upon his scales, and with his Lord عز وجل, each time he carries out an act of obedience he increases in Eeman, and each time he carries out an act of disobedience he decreases in Eeman, and (likewise) whenever he leaves something from the obligations then he also decreases in Eeman and so on.

¹ - The rawaatib are those superogatory prayers directly connected to the obligatory prayers.
Umm Habeebah (رضي الله عنها) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"Whoever prays twelve units of prayer in a day and night, a house will be built for him in Paradise: Four units before Dhuhr and two units after it, two units after Maghrib, two units after Isha, and two units before the Fajr prayer." - At-Tirmidhi #415 (authenticated by Sheikh Al-Albani in Saheeh Al-Jaami').
