Shaykh Muhammad ibn Sālih al-Uthaymīn, may Allāh have mercy upon him, said:

"If a person lacks knowledge, the first priority is to learn, and only then to call others.

Someone might ask: Does this contradict the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “Convey from me, even if it is a single verse”?

The answer is no, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Convey from me,” meaning that what is conveyed must originate from the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings be upon him). This is what we intend. When we say the caller needs knowledge, we are not saying they must attain an advanced level of scholarship. Rather, we say they should only call to what they know and not speak about what they do not know."
